JOB SUMMARY:    

To provide technical assistance with epidemiological procedures under the supervision of infection control practitioners.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Complete the daily patient cultures.

  • Complete environmental cultures as requested.
  • Review medical records of patients who have reportable diseases and send pertinent information to the Galveston County Health Department.
  • Perform observational studies of compliance with the Infection Control policies.
  • Assist in Epidemiology laboratory with functions such as sub-culturing, pouring media, labeling tubes, and preparing the carts for daily activities.
  • Assist with data entry into National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and departmental databases.
  • Assist Infection Control Practitioners with updating the resistant organism tracking white board.
  • Assist with Environmental Rounds.
  • Assist with patient and employee exposures.
  • Adheres to internal controls.

 

 MARGINAL OR PERIODIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

High school or equivalent.  Completion of Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician program and one (1) year patient care experience.  Medical Terminology.

EQUIPMENT:

Standard office and laboratory equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/LOCATION OF POSITION:

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments. May be exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases, harmful chemicals, and/or disoriented or combative patients. 

OTHER: 

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
