JOB SUMMARY:

The Rehabilitation Teacher works under the direct supervision of the Coordinator, Physically Handicapped Offenders Program (PHOP). As a member of the PHOP team, the Rehabilitation Teacher supports the achievement of completion of activities of daily living of blind or blind multi-disabled offenders assigned to the progrm. 

MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS: 

  • Contributes to the success of the UTMB Correctional Managed Care organization.
  • With the Coordinator, PHOP, establishes performance goals as they relate to individual and program goals.
  • Provides adaptive skills training directed toward goals; provides supportive counseling directed toward completion of offender activities of daily living.
  • Assists the offender in adapting to housing / job assignments and in obtaining and using adaptive daily living aids and appliances.
  • Coordinates Rehabilitation Teacher service delivery with other PHOP team members.
  • Develops and utilizes TDCJ-ID resources that are supportive to offender completion of activities of daily living.
  • Develops materials and/or techniques that impact quality and quantity of service delivered.
  • Documents medical records as required.
  • Assists the Coordinator, PHOP in activities such as: task analysis of unit jobs; development of devices / techniques to increase offender job assignment access and performance; and performing other duties related to program goals, as assigned.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with at least one year of work experience in rehabilitation teaching, rehabilitation, or education of persons with disabilities; or two years of work experience in general education or other related field.  The degree must be in the field of rehabilitation, education, psychology, sociology, or other related field.  

EQUIPMENT:

Standard clinical correctional facility equipment. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Standard hospital, clinical and/or office environment within a correctional managed care facility. 

OTHER:

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification, may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code.
